6 Questions with Connor Caruso
Most coaches play the algorithm or hide behind a launch monitor.
Connor does neither.
He’s built a growing Arizona golf business by doing the one thing most coaches won’t: showing up as himself. He teaches every day. Post real swings. Cracks jokes. Tells the truth. It attracts students who share the same goals.
In this week’s “6 Questions with…,” we explore his journey from GolfTec’s youngest director of instruction at 25 to a full-time coach, and how he leverages social media like no one else.
What’s the biggest swing myth you see with players?
“Keep your head down. It’s the worst advice in golf.”
People top the ball and get told it’s because they “looked up.” That’s not it. Keeping your head down kills rotation; it’s like trying to throw a punch while staring at the floor.
I’ll use drills where players turn their heads early to feel rotation. DJ did it when he switched to a cut. Annika did it forever.
If your head’s still down after contact, you’re not swinging, you’re posing.
You’ve seen a lot of swings. What’s the fastest way to spot a good player?
“It’s the setup. And the fit.”
Before I see a swing, I see how they walk. Good players carry themselves differently, just like in any sport. Think of Rory when he’s got that bounce.
But technically?
A good setup is everything: ball position, posture, alignment. You can’t fake that.
Bad setup? I already know what’s coming.
Build the perfect golfer.
Tiger’s brain: most clutch mind ever.
Scottie’s 100–150 yard game: he lives at 10 feet.
Tiger’s long irons: best to ever do it.
Jack’s putter: made everyone that mattered.
Rory’s driver: when he’s on, no one’s better off the tee.
What do most coaches get wrong about content?
“They either copy each other or stop having fun.”
The best content feels like you. Most coaches just repost trends or overcoach in 15 seconds. I post what I’d want to see: good swings, music, real talk.
I’ve attracted students who don’t always look like traditional golfers, and that’s the point. They see my content, get the vibe, and show up ready to work.
Post what you love, and the right players will find you.
What’s changed most since going independent?
“Freedom. Flexibility. Fun.”
I’m not locked inside 10 hours a day like at GolfTec. Some days I’m teaching indoors, other days I’m outside at Dobson loading balls in the den caddy.
My sweet spot is 5 lessons a day. That’s when I’m locked in, but still have energy to play or create content.
Now, I coach on my terms, and my students feel the same way.
Favorite course in the Valley?
“Quintero. Every time.”
If you’re visiting and want the best public course in Arizona, look no further. Make the drive. The layout, the views, it’s pure.
I love We-Ko-Pa, too, but Quintero is elite. They’re redoing it now, and I’m counting the days ‘til it reopens.
Connor isn’t selling swing secrets: he’s building better players. His coaching style, content, and client base all reflect what happens when you show up as yourself, consistently, and unfiltered.
