6 Questions with Marty Sanchez

I’ve known Marty for years, and he’s the best of us: humble, hungry, allergic to excuses. From caddying at Silverleaf to Grass League, he’s built a career on persistence and personality.

Here’s our conversation on golf’s new era, life in Scottsdale, and why the grind never dies.

What’s been the most brutal stretch of your career?

2020. COVID shut everything down. No tournaments, no money, no direction. I moved from New Mexico to Phoenix and started caddying at Whisper Rock.

But quitting never crossed my mind. Golf’s always been a financial grind, not a passion one. You get creative when you’re broke, but you still believe.

You’ve worked with Asher and Miura. How did those partnerships start?

Asher’s the title sponsor for the old Outlaw Tour, now the Asher Tour. Michael Leary runs it, and I’ve known him since his Golden State days.

My Asher deal actually started before they even sponsored the tour. They’ve had my back from day one, and Miura’s been just as loyal. You don’t forget that.

Grass League is being called the “F1 of Golf.” What’s it like inside the ropes?

It’s the most fun I’ve ever had competing. You’ve got pros, YouTubers, and former Tour players mixing it up under lights and cameras.

Thousands of people, Peacock coverage, team formats, it’s wild.

It brings to life courses like Goat Hill and Grass Clippings, and tells stories the PGA Tour often overlooks.

“Mini-tour golf is a sprint. You’re chasing 20-under every week at courses that aren’t perfect.”

You’ve lived the Scottsdale grind. What’s that community really like?

Scottsdale’s like golf’s version of the UFC Performance Institute, everyone’s elite and chasing something. When I moved here, I joined Phoenix Country Club fast and found a crew that pushed me.

But golf’s still a lonely game. My dad told me that early. If you can’t spend six hours alone on a range, you’ll never make it through a weekend cut.

You caddy at Silverleaf between events. What’s that experience taught you?

It’s humbling. You’re looping for CEOs and Tour players. Guys who’ve made it and every round’s a masterclass.

Watching how they prepare, how they talk to themselves, how they recover after bad shots, that’s the education. If you’re smart, you treat every bag like a mentorship.

How do you balance brand partnerships while staying authentic?

By remembering I’m lucky even to have them. Growing up, if you’d told me I’d win pro events and rep Miura and Asher, I’d laugh. They don’t ask for much, and I make sure they’re tagged because gratitude matters.

For young players, brand work is the business side. You can’t just grind, you’ve got to create. Every Arizona range has one guy who hits it so pure it makes you question your swing, but Marty?

He’s the bridge between old-school grind and new-school game: caddie, creator, competitor.

He’s the one still working when the lights go out.

Follow Marty and the Los Angeles Roses @ the 2026 Grass League Championship on December 5-6.
