There are Scottsdale golf courses you recommend to visitors.

Then there are the places locals actually use.

For me, Starfire was always the second kind.

The property has returned to its historic name, Scottsdale Country Club, and the name change is only the beginning.

The most interesting addition is The Shooter, a 10-hole, par-29 short course reimagined by Arizona golf architect Forrest Richardson.

It is 1,145 yards of golf that does not take itself too seriously but still asks real questions of your wedge game.

Nine holes are par 3s. The sixth, called Shorty, is a 180-foot par 2 and is billed as Arizona’s only par-2 hole.

Then there is the fourth hole, Blue Boulder. Its punchbowl green is built around a 30,000-pound blue-green boulder brought up from near Tucson. It is strategic, strange, and almost guaranteed to end up in the group chat.

The other holes have names like Raisin’ Cain, Watering Hole, Dick’s Hat-Trick, and Old Maud. The course has its own cowboy mascot. You can play six holes or the full 10, with a complete loop taking less than two hours.

That combination matters.

Beside The Shooter is The Bandana, a free nine-hole putting course covering roughly 25,000 square feet.

The green winds around a native rock garden filled with cactus, desert plants, and locally sourced stone. Hole locations and playing directions can change, making it feel more like a putting course than an oversized warm-up green.

No tee time and no green fee.

Bring a putter. Bring a friend. Agree on the amount before anyone sees the first break.

We need more of that.

The old practice experience has given way to 24 covered hitting bays, each with seating for four and TrackMan technology.

The cover alone is a serious upgrade. Practicing in Scottsdale should not require choosing between your golf game and heat exhaustion.

TrackMan gives players real carry and ball-flight feedback instead of forcing them to guess into the Arizona sky. You can work through a structured practice session, test distances, or use games and challenges to make a bucket competitive.

The purpose has not changed. It is still a place for a local golfer to figure something out.

The tools are just much better now.

Golf properties often spend millions improving the course and forget that people need a reason to stay.

Robin’s Nest, which opened in March 2026, turns a renovated Airstream near the clubhouse into a casual coffee stop, beer garden, and shaded place to recap the round.

Evening lighting connects the range, The Shooter, and The Bandana into one backyard-style golf setup. A larger restaurant and patio concept called Brand 53 is planned for a later phase, along with a future refresh of the Championship Course.

The goal is becoming clear: this is not supposed to be one product with a parking lot. It should be a place where golf can take 40 minutes, two hours, or most of the day.

Scottsdale-based True Spec Golf will become the official club-fitting partner of Arizona State men’s golf for the 2026–27 season.
