The Valley is loaded with unforgettable golf, but these five public-course holes stand above the rest.
Scottsdale, Phoenix, Mesa, Gilbert, Glendale: one iconic hole each. Drama, history, and a minor trauma. If your favorite didn’t make the list, that’s your problem. Let’s argue.

Every good round starts with a great shot.

The Valley’s Most Iconic Public Golf Holes
Five cities. Five holes. If your favorite didn’t make the list, don’t worry… I probably did that on purpose.
Scottsdale: TPC Scottsdale Stadium Course, Hole 16 (Par 3)
There are “famous holes,” and then there’s the 16th at TPC Scottsdale, the only spot in Arizona where a thin 8-iron can ruin your entire personality. Even without the Phoenix Open circus, you feel the ghosts of Tiger’s ace and 20,000 sunburned fans who once booed a guy for adjusting his glove too long.
The shot is simple on paper, but once you stand there, the air gets heavy. Scottsdale has prettier holes, sure, but nothing else makes your hands sweat before you even pull a club. This is the Valley’s coliseum, and you’re the gladiator.
Phoenix: Papago Golf Club, Hole 2 (Par 4)
Papago’s second hole is Phoenix golf in one frame, gorgeous, red-rock drama up front, and a silent threat lurking behind it. You pipe a fairway finder, feeling like you own the place, only for that uphill approach to expose your short game.
The false front has sent more balls back to players’ feet than any other hole in the city. The green is perched just high enough to make you second-guess your wedge, and the buttes stare down at you like judges on a cooking show. Phoenix golfers claim they “always” par it. Sure you do, buddy.
Mesa: Las Sendas Golf Club, Hole 6 (Par 5)
Suppose you’ve ever wanted to play a hole that feels like a desert roller coaster. Welcome to Las Sendas #6. A double-dogleg par 5 that curves like it’s avoiding witnesses, this hole forces you to think early and pray late. Every shot feels like a decision, and every decision feels like a test.
Then you reach the elevated green, and Mesa gifts you one of the best views in the East Valley, Red Mountain looking like it’s posing for a postcard. A birdie here feels earned. A par feels like survival. A bogey feels… normal.
Gilbert: Kokopelli Golf Club, Hole 18 (Par 5)
Gilbert saved its chaos for last. Kokopelli’s 18th is the perfect closer because it doesn’t just invite disaster, it rolls out the red carpet. Elevated tee, narrow landing area, a lake guarding the green like a jealous bouncer, it’s all there.
Every Gilbert golfer has the same story: “Yeah, I went for it in two.” Half of them made it. The other half still sees that splash when they close their eyes. If you eagle it, you walk off like a local hero. If you double it, you end up sitting in the parking lot questioning your life choices. That’s golf.
Glendale: The Legend at Arrowhead, Hole 5 (Par 4)
The Legend’s fifth hole is Arnold Palmer’s love letter to anyone who enjoys fear. A shimmering lake flanks the entire right side, ready to collect every push, block, or over-confident fade. The elevated tee gives you the illusion of safety, but the approach snaps you back to reality.
Commit, and you feel like you've beaten Arnie himself. Bail out and you’re scrambling for bogey like it’s tax season. Glendale players call this the “truth serum” hole. It tells you exactly who you are as a golfer. Sometimes you don’t want to know.
If it’s good, I’ll play it. If it’s bad, I’m roasting it in next week’s issue.
