Two Phoenix heavyweights. One shared designer. Just a stoplight apart. Raven and Legacy may sit side by side beneath South Mountain, but they deliver two wildly different golf experiences.

In this week’s Turf Wars, I break down the battle and crown a local favorite.

Raven vs Legacy

In this corner…

The tree-lined tactician.

And in the other…

The wide-open workhorse.

Built by the same architect. Separated by a stoplight, played by everyone from weekend grinders to mini-tour grinders. And I would know I’ve worked inside the clubhouse walls at both.

This one’s not just close, it’s personal. (I’ve worked at both courses)

Round 1: First Impressions (Arrival + Vibe)

Raven hits you different the moment you turn in.

Palm trees line the entry like a red carpet. The clubhouse has resort polish. The starter usually looks like he’s got today’s pin sheet in his back pocket. It feels big. Premium. Ready for a camera crew.

Legacy? It’s got grit, big range energy. Pull up at 3:45 for a 4:00 twilight tee time, and no one bats an eye. There’s a warmth to it, a scrappy charm that says: “Hey man, let’s go shoot 79 and grab tacos after.”

Edge: Raven, if you want private club vibes without the dues.

Round 2: Layout + Shot Value

Gary Panks designed both. But they took very different turns.

Raven is surgical. Tree-lined corridors. Sneaky doglegs. Raised greens that demand aerial precision. You can’t fake your way around here.

Legacy is wider, but don’t confuse space for safety. Elevation changes, everywhere. Greens are perched and unpredictable. If Raven is a chess match, Legacy is poker.

Edge: Raven, for players who crave shot value on every swing.

Round 3: Course Conditions

Raven’s turf is usually dialed. Fairways roll tight. Greens are firm and fast when they should be. Even mid-summer, the place holds its own, especially the back nine, where the tree cover gives it a cool, shaded feel few Phoenix courses can replicate.

Legacy’s made significant strides. Greens run smoothly. Bunkers are better than you’d expect for the price. And in the overseed season? It looks and plays like a sleeper in the top 10 in the Valley.

Still, day to day, shot to shot…

Edge: Raven, by a wedge bounce just a little sharper in the details.

Round 4: Difficulty + Scoring

Legacy gives you chances. The par 5s? Green lights for aggressive play. Misses off the tee aren’t death sentences, and the landscape is kind to mid-handicaps.

Raven? Nah. She doesn’t hand anything out. Every par feels earned. You’ve got to commit to lines, manage your misses, and keep the ball below the hole. Get sloppy, and it’s a long walk to the cart path.

Edge: Legacy, if you’re chasing red numbers.

Round 5: Intangibles

Legacy has a rich history; it hosted an LPGA event back in the 2000s and still retains that tournament feel. The South Mountain views are unreal at golden hour, and there’s a reason locals keep it in their twilight rotation.

But Raven has a soul. The trees. The quiet. The sudden sense that you’ve left the city. Every time I play it, I remember why it’s one of the best under-the-radar courses in the state.

And the sunsets? Raven might have the best 18th-hole walk in the Valley.

Edge: Raven, for the feels. Legacy, for the fun.

Winner’s Circle

Winner: Raven Golf Club.

It’s simply the more complete course: tighter, tougher, and richer. If you want to earn every shot and soak in the South Mountain magic, this is the one.

Wildcard:
