Most people dress for the course. Dress for the invite back.

This week, I’m featuring BTG, a creator building for golfers who respect tradition, details, and the quiet art of looking like you belong.

If you want to go from guest to member without saying a word, start with how you show up.

WellVision Plus By WellPutt

Sharpen your putting precision like never before with Wellvision Plus, the ultimate dual-mirror training system trusted by Tour players worldwide to refine their setup and stroke. Engineered with an ultra-thin, black stainless steel design (just 0.03 inches, the thinnest on the market!). It delivers a precision training experience that fits seamlessly on any surface.

  • The primary mirror provides visual feedback to confirm proper eye position.

  • The secondary mirror provides visual feedback to confirm proper shoulder and body position.

  • The adjustable start line gate allows you to check your ability to send the ball along your intended start line.

  • The adjustable putter head gate helps you train for solid ball contact.

Good morning everyone,

By way of introduction, my name is BTG, and I run the BowTiedGolf newsletter.

My publication covers the classic and traditional elements of the game of golf, and why I love them. Topics range from country club events to the nuanced quirks of our great game that I want to preserve. I want to help golf grow, but in the right direction.

In my newsletter, we treat golf attire with the same reverence as a well-struck 3-iron. Because clothes, like the game itself, are about details. Today, I want to share what we’ve learned about dressing like you belong, whether you’re a junior member or a seasoned guest.

Shirts

Here’s the rule: simple wins. A sky-blue polo with no visible branding will take you further than any moisture-wicking peacock explosion. My go-to formula is sky blue, khaki bottoms, and a clean belt. That’s 80% of the battle.

Brands I trust include Peter Millar, when it’s quiet, and Holderness & Bourne if you like a structured collar. Just avoid anything with the “look at me” energy of a bachelor party in Vegas.

Belts

Belts are like golf gloves…no one talks about them unless they’re terrible.

A bright white belt is not just dated. It’s damning. It says, “I haven’t updated my wardrobe since the 2012 Players Championship.” Instead, reach for something with texture and class: a needlepoint or knit belt. You can find them at Holderness and Bourne or Peter Millar.

Shoes

The most consistent advice I give readers is this: buy white golf shoes.

It’s simple. White shoes look clean, signal summer, and pair with everything. FootJoy Premieres are the gold standard, classic shape, leather feel, and subtle detailing. For a tech-forward feel, FootJoy HyperFlex or Adidas Tour360 will serve, as long as you avoid loud colors or wild spikes.

G/Fore Gallivanters also hit the right note, especially in pebble leather. TRUE Linkswear is fine. Just make sure they’re not scuffed and the soles aren’t falling off. Your shoes don’t have to be expensive, but they do need to look cared for.

The Brands

Golf fashion is drowning in collabs and chaos—Malbon, Metalwood, Radry, and the like. While we respect creativity, there’s a time and place for it. That place isn’t the first tee at an old-money club.

Clubs reward restraint. They’re allergic to flash. You don’t need to dress like the assistant pro from Soho House. Instead, build a small wardrobe of consistent pieces: three or four polos, two pairs of pants, a clean quarter-zip, a great belt, and white shoes. Rotate wisely. Let fit and fabric do the work.

Why It Matters

People at clubs notice everything. They might not say it, but they clock the untucked shirt, the hat indoors, and the sneaker-style spikes with neon soles. These little things accumulate. If you’re hoping to get invited back or apply for membership, presentation matters.

You don’t need to cosplay old money. But you do need to show that you respect the setting. That’s what this is about. Not being fancy, being fluent.

Final Thought

If you’re young and trying to climb the ladder from muni to semi-private, or from guest to member, there are no shortcuts. However, there are signals, and how you dress is one of them.

The goal isn’t to be mistaken for a member. It’s to be invited to become one. When someone sees you dressed sharply, playing briskly, fixing divots, and saying “thanks” to the maintenance team, they start to think: “He gets it.”

And that’s the highest compliment in golf.
